Agriculture Liaison/Food Animal/Food Safety and Committee

Functions:

  • Address issues impacting food animal practice: regulatory, residue prevention, meat and milk quality, competition from unlicensed sources, etc.
  • Provide and/or arrange for continuing education for food animal practitioners.
  • Develop client education materials for food animal practice.
  • Serve as liaison between the LVMA and the State Agriculture Commissioner (including the
  • State Veterinarian's office) and maintain close working relationships with state and animal health agencies.
    concerns with food safety as it applies to foods of animal origin and public health as it relates to diseases and health issues resulting from interrelationships between man and animals. The charges of the committee are:
  • Make recommendations on food safety and public health policy for the LVMA.
  • Act as an advisory body on food safety and public health for state agriculture and health officials.
  • Counter adverse publicity concerning food of animal origin and human health problems associated with animal contact.
  • Support the veterinary practitioners with information for clients regarding foods of animal origin and animal-associated diseases.

Convention Planning Committee

Functions:

  • The committee is charged with assisting the Executive Director in planning conventions, including the site selection, educational programs, socials and other aspects of the convention which the Board may deem necessary.

Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness Committee

Functions:

  • Develop a program for care of animals during emergencies and natural disasters.

Equine Committee

Functions:

  • This autonomous committee is charged with the planning and execution of the equine seminar held annually during Kentucky Derby weekend in Shreveport. The committee is active in support of research and equine industry activities at the School and throughout the State.

Legislative Committee

Functions:

  • This committee is composed of the LVMA Board members, members of the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine, local VMA presidents, the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and other with special interest in legislative matters. The committee discusses and formulates positions on important legislative matters.

Peer Assistance Committee

Functions:

  • The committee functions in identifying and assisting licensed veterinarians and paraprofessionals impaired by burnout, alcohol, drugs, mental illness, or any similar situation. The committee works with the LA Board of Veterinary Medicine to assist the individual to restoration, if possible.

Public Relations Committee

Functions:

  • This committee is very active in community and membership services activities. It is charged with the Association newsletter, directory, and all promotional activities, including but not limited to: National Pet Week, Healthy Heart Awareness Month, Ciba Animal Health Scholarship Program and news releases of current veterinary related topics.

Small Animal Committee

Functions:

  • This committee functions to provide speakers of interest to small animal practitioners for state meetings.

Student Committee

Functions:

  • The objectives of this committee is to foster relationships of professional collegiality between LVMA members and students of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and to educate students in the duties, responsibilities and advantages of membership in their state veterinary association.
  • The committee accomplishes this by: Wet-lab presentations, demonstrations and lectures presented by LVMA members.
  • Mentoring of students by LVMA members.
  • Student participation in LVMA annual and summer meetings.
  • Student education and involvement in public policy and professional issues of concern to the LVMA through receipt of publications, other correspondence and participation on LVMA committees where appropriate.

Vendor Liaison Committee

Functions:

  • This committee is charged with ensuring that the vendors are content overall with the annual convention. The committee functions to:
  • Handle complaints.
  • Answer questions.
  • Increase traffic through the exhibit hall.
  • Improve the convention for both exhibitors and veterinarians.
