About the LVMA

The Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA) was founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1953.

LVMA Mission and Goals:

  • Advance the science and art of veterinary medicine and its relationship to the public's health and biological sciences and agriculture in the state of Louisiana.
  • Promote the health of all species and to extend to the agricultural community and the community-at-large the benefits of sound and progressive leadership in the diagnosis and treatment of animals.
  • Foster, maintain and enhance public understanding of the nature of the veterinary profession.
  • Do all things necessary and desirable to further high standards of care in the treatment of animals and continuing standards of excellence in the professional training and continuing education of doctors of veterinary medicine.
  • Promote goodwill among its members and to seek protection of their rights and privileges.
  • Advance the maintenance of ethical standards which reflect the learned nature of the profession and the peculiar responsibilities of the veterinarian to the whole community of Louisiana.

“The Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA ) supports laws against the use and/or transport of domestic or foreign animals for fighting ventures. Further the LVMA recommends that animal fighting be considered a felony offense.

The LVMA condemns spectator events involving animals that have injury or death intended. These events included, but are not limited to, cock fighting, dog fighting and bull fighting.

The LVMA supports banning cock fighting in Louisiana. “

2008 Summer Meeting

The 2008 Summer Meeting will be held at Four Points by Sheraton in Ft. Walton Beach , Florida , June 19-21, 2008.

This year’s speaker will be Dr. Rick Alleman.  Dr. Alleman practiced veterinary medicine in a clinical small-animal practice for nine years in New Orleans . He became a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (companion animal specialty) in 1987 and was recertified in 1997 and 2007. Dr. Alleman completed residency training in clinical pathology and his PhD in molecular biology of tick-transmitted diseases, both at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine. He is currently a professor of clinical pathology at the University of Florida , College of Veterinary Medicine . This session is being sponsored by IDEXX.

Please make sure to indicate that you are part of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association to ensure  you receive the group rate.  Please call by Monday, May 19, 2008.

Eight hours of continuing education will be provided at the meeting.
